Your Subconscious Impulse: Which Moon Phase Were You Born Under?
The Moon always provided me with the biggest trove of unseen insights. Because the Moon is so personal, we can get tremendous breakthroughs just by looking underneath to this the subconscious spot in our astrological charts. You may know that going along with the ebb and flow of life, including the Moon phases, helps you swim with, not against, life’s natural rhythm. However, knowing which of the 8 phases you were born under helps you tune in to how you approach life subconsciously, and harness your impulses.
The Moon is the nearest light to earth and has a monthly cycle, changing astrological signs every two and a half days. These changes have a powerful influence on our daily life, influencing our mood, physical energy, concentration, self-care, and well being. The cycle from a New to Full Moon takes about 28 days:
The New Moon
The first quarter (Waxing Crescent) Moon
The waxing gibbous Moon
The Full Moon
The waning gibbous Moon
The third quarter Moon
The balsamic Moon
The phase of the Moon that you are born under imprints you with this subconscious energy. Knowing which phase of the Moon’s cycle you were born under can be illuminating to understand what your base energy levels are, on a subconscious level in this lifetime. It shows how you impact and are influenced by those nearest to you, in particular your partner, children, and even your mother.
You can tell at a glance which Moon phase you are born under by checking your astrological chart. Look up the Sun and Moon (or its symbols) in your chart. Are they in conjunction (joined? A possible New Moon?)? In opposition (a Full Moon)? Is the Moon trailing behind the Sun (a waning or balsamic moon?)?
Born on a New Moon
The Sun and Moon are conjunct at the New Moon, offering a concentration of energy that is beyond our vision. Traditionally, the New Moon is also called the Dark Moon and is “combust” in (or blinded by) the Sun, making the Moon qualities non-existent or unaware of. Maternal influences are weak.
People born under a New Moon tend to feel their way, not sure where it will all lead, often accumulating interesting, varied experiences along the way.
Because the balance of the feminine and masculine is in perfect harmony, they can gain a knack for full self awareness, which is powerful for achieving what they seek.
Born on a First Quarter Moon (Waxing Crescent)
The First Quarter Moon is the midpoint of the Moon's waxing hemi-cycle. It is a building time. Any new action brings excitement, and also threat. This is why the first and Last Quarter Moons are often called “crisis” times.
If you are born under this Moon, you possess vitality and courage. You are not afraid to question or to critique. In this lifetime, you may be called to confront and overcome habits and expectations of your past. Through exertion, you develop discrimination and willpower — which blend the strengths of both the Moon and Mars. Through failures, you learn more about the power of the subconscious.
Born on a Waxing Gibbous Moon
The Moon is almost at its peak. Now the Moon is greater than a half circle, and illuminated on the right-hand side as it is waxing. It appears three-quarters full and is already lighting up the night sky. There is passion and purpose to this phase.
Those born under this born want to put something meaningful into the world, to bring forth a universal light or truth. This drives them to be natural learners. They spend their lives cultivating nurturing relationships and their maturity and perfectionism.
Born under a Full Moon
Now the Moon blooms and ripens. The Sun and Moon are opposite each other and alight in each other’s full glory. Full Moon types have a yearning for a mate, knowing that, once they find “another”, they’ll be able to grow even more. This is often true, as opposing forces help us expand.
For those of us born under a Full Moon, the common rituals for noting this cycle are also relevant: make space for calmness. Quieting your mind can help you make sense of the external. Likewise, making peace with what’s going on in the world around you helps you come to…resolving life’s continual tugs and pushes.
Nothing resolves an opposition like acceptance.

Born under a Disseminating Moon (Waning Gibbous Moon)
Three to four days thereafter the Full Moon, the Disseminating Moon occurs, getting ready to complete the lunar cycle. A sense of insight hangs in the air. With new perspectives must come new action.
Being born under this Moon phase often gives a talent for communication; as the urge to complete, convey, convince someone or something is strong. They make strong impressions on other people they come across.
Born under a Last Quarter Moon
The Sun-Moon square occurs again, this time on a waning cycle. If the waxing square triggers a call to action, this waning square triggers us to find another direction (astrologer-philosopher Dane Rudhyar called the waxing square a "crisis in action" and the waning square a "crisis in consciousness").
Born on a Balsamic Moon
On this waning Sun/Moon semi-square, the Moon is a mere sliver in the night sky, forty-five degrees behind the Sun. It appears in the pre-dawn hours, when most of us are sound asleep.
People born under such a Moon are imbued with this otherworldly nature and a sense of what’s past. They tend to be "old souls", and are wrapping up loose ends from many lives. Deep meaningful connections feed them, as well as ground them.
Balsamics have a strong future-orientation. They're often ahead of the curve, like the kid doing slick skateboard tricks long before Tony Hawk made it popular. This doesn't mean Balsamics know what's going to happen. In fact they're usually more confused than the rest about where they're headed. Well-meaning astrologers might want to help with inspiring crystal-ball work. But this in effect subverts the mysterious process of Dark Moon births.
Balsamic instincts are likely better than any astrologer's. But instead of naming the future, these individuals need to live it, feeling their way as they go. Ask a Balsamic how they accomplished their life's greatest changes, and they'll usually say "It just happened" or "I fell into it." They ride the wave until they land on the beach. There's nothing passive to this approach. Rather it's a deeper form of intelligence, about which reason doesn't know much.
